I would think most domestic discipline takes place in a rather discreet setting. Some exceptions might include discipline in front of some close (and usually kinky) friends in the know or family members. Discipline within the context of a D/s relationship, and in our case a Wife Led Marriage, always carries some level of embarrassment and/or humiliation.
There are of course other ways of expression that can be used to subtly, or not so subtly, let others know "who's in charge" without having the submissive put themselves over their dominant's lap for a spanking. Leaving a paddle or crop lying around, or positioned for others to see can be a very effective "ice breaker" to steer the conversation a certain way.

Goals for submissives
Being in a relationship, where your dominant has built your own little punishment corner into the living room walls. Just big enough for you to fit in and small enough to prevent fidgeting and external distractions.
And the regular humiliation of having to explain and demonstrate to guests what the little alcove, labelled "Naughty Corner" is used for.
I can just see Diane explaining to the contractor why She wanted this particular little alcove!
And since it's Tuesday, I do feel compelled to add a little something else, even though it's not necessarily related to discipline of any sort.
